DESCRIPTION
This dramatic engraving depicts English physician Edward Jenner vaccinating his son. In 1796, Jenner proved that serum from cowpox would protect against smallpox. The bronze sculpture by Giulio Monteverde (1837 - 1917) was created in 1873 and exhibited at the Paris Exhibition in 1878. This engraving, by Barchett, illustrated the sculpture and appeared in a guide to the exhibition published in 1878. It is now in the public domain. Digital restoration by Steven Wynn Photography.
